Halloween 2008 in DLRP

Zoals we hier al schreven, zullen de bezoekers van het Disneyland Park tijdens het Halloweenseizoen, dat loopt vanaf 4 oktober tot 2 november 2008, Jack Skellington en Sally uit Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas kunnen ontmoeten ! Er zal op geregelde tijdstippen een Meet ’n Greet zijn aan Boot Hill, het kerkhof van Phantom Manor, met het koppel en ook tijdens een preparade zullen ze te zien zijn. Disney heeft ondertussen via een officieel persbericht een aantal publiciteitsfoto’s vrijgegeven.

Op MegaVideo kan je zowel de nieuwste Disney/Pixarfilm “Wall-E” als de nieuwste Walt Disney Pictures/Walden Mediafilm “The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian” bekijken. We hadden het gisteren reeds over het halloweenseizoen in Hong Kong Disneyland dat start op 26 september 2008 en eindigt op 1 november 2008. Ondertusen kregen we ook de promotiefilmpjes voor dit griezelige seizoen in Hong Kong Disneyland van onze Chinese vriend hkdisneycrazy. Geniet ervan !

Haunted Halloween 2008 in HKDL

Vanaf 26 september 2008 en dit voor 37 dagen (dus tot 1 november 2008) zullen duistere krachten over Hong Kong Disneyland heersen tijdens de Haunted Halloween. De Halloweensfeer begint al vanaf het moment dat de gasten het resort betreden en daar door The Pumpkin King Jack Skellington en Sally in het nieuwe spookachtige decor verwelkomd worden.

Het Main Street Haunted Hotel opent ook dit jaar de deuren. De Main Street Haunted Hotel zal heropenen van dit jaar. Het spook van Victoria Maxwell zal de nieuwe en de terugkerende gasten weer verwelkomen in het hotel. De vraag is natuurlijk of de gasten die inchecken ook zullen uitchecken.

In Tomorrowland wordt Space Mountain omgevormd in Space Mountain - Ghost Galaxy.

Op algemene vraag komt ook de exclusieve Glow in the Park Halloween Parade terug en dit met nog meer UV-belichting zodat het allemaal nog spectaculairder wordt. Jack Skellington als de Pumpkin King, Dr Finklestein samen met Sally uit de The Nightmare Before Christmas, Disney’s schurken en zombies zijn allemaal van de partij. En als kers op de taart maakt een Ghost Pirate Ship zijn debuut tijdens deze parade.

De duistere krachten breiden dit jaar hun grondgebied uit naar Adventureland. De gasten zullen in Adventureland de recent ontdekte Demon Jungle kunnen ontdekken maar zullen ook moeten proberen te ontsnappen aan Demon Jungle. Deze Deze griezelige ervaring is speciaal voor Hong Kong Disneyland ontworpen! Als de bezoekers het geluk hebben om te ontsnappen, krijgen ze te maken met een andere onverwachte uitdaging op de Adventureland Haunted Trail.

Voor de jonge volwassenen lanceert Hong Kong Disneyland opnieuw een Halloweenavondticket. Met zo’n ticket dat ongeveer een 18 Euro kost, kan men op vrijdag of zaterdag na 18.30 uur het park binnen en kan men tot sluitingstijd (23 uur) van de Halloweensfeer genieten.

The Muppets

Kermit en Miss Piggy plannen een comeback want momenteel bekijkt men bij Disney een pilootaflevering van wat een nieuwe miniserie rond The Muppets zou kunnen worden. Volgens de plannen zou men als de serie een succes wordt, opnieuw een nieuwe wekelijkse Muppetsshow uitzenden en zou er zelfs een nieuwe bioscoopfilm gemaakt worden.

De Muppets, een creatie van de in 1990 overleden poppenspeler Jim Henson, veroveren in de jaren '70 de wereld. Miljoenen kijkers van over de hele wereld lachten elke week met de dolle fratsen van Kermit de kikker, de opdringerige Miss Piggy, Ozzie Bear, de vele andere knotsgekke personages en hun bekende gast van de week. Er kwamen ook zes bioscoopfilms en twee animatiefilms. In 1982 werd de show stopgezet, maar de Muppets keerden nog terug, onder meer voor Muppets tonight dat van 1996 tot 1998 liep, en enkele tv-specials.

Kimi Raikkonen has dismissed suggestions he is suffering from flagging motivation, insisting he remains determined to fight back in the championship battle.

The world champion’s recent inconsistent form has provoked criticism from both the media and some paddock observers, while speculation persists that the 28-year-old is considering retirement at the end of his Ferrari contract in 2009.

Last Sunday’s European Grand Prix prompted further questions about the Finn’s performances after he was again comprehensively outperformed by team-mate Felipe Massa and knocked a mechanic over in the pit lane during his final fuel stop – before an engine failure compounded his misery.

But despite falling 13 points adrift of championship leader Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ standings, Raikkonen is adamant he has both the necessary time and desire to remain in the title hunt.

“We knew we had to take a risk for Valencia and we did not finish the race,” he told his official website.

“It’s a shame, but it’s useless to grieve for that.

“One third of the season is still left and it’s enough to fight back.

“If somebody has doubts concerning my motivation, let them doubt.

“One thing I can say is that right now I am more motivated than ever.”

While keen to move on from his disappointing Valencia weekend, Raikkonen – who qualified with three laps more fuel than pole-sitter Massa – did concede he and the team probably got his strategy wrong given his poor recent qualifying form.

“The Friday practice was good – I had a good feeling in the car,” he said.

“But Saturday was a little bit cooler and we struggled again in qualifying.

“We should have been more aggressive.

“Obviously there has been a lot of talk about my qualifying problems.

“But in Hungary I just went wide on my last lap of Q3. Without that we would easily have been third. Then we got the fourth place and after that I knew the race would be very difficult again.”

He now hopes that next week’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, a venue where he is chasing a fourth consecutive victory at, is the place to start his title fightback.

“I love that circuit, and obviously, I would love to race there for the whole year long,” he said.

“It’s the best of all the circuits and hopefully we finally get the car working the way I want it to work.

“We go to Spa to win again.”

Modern automotive engineering is a branch of vehicle engineering, incorporating elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering as applied to the design, manufacture and operation of motorcycles, automobiles, buses and trucks and their respective engineering subsystems.

Automotive engineers are involved in almost every aspect of designing cars and trucks, from the initial concepts right through to manufacturing them.

Broadly speaking automotive engineers are separated into three main streams: product engineering, development engineering and manufacturing engineering.

* Product engineer (also called design engineer), that would design components/systems (i.e brake engineer and battery engineer). This engineer designs and test a part, seeing that it meets all its requirements (i.e. the shock), performs as required, material meets desired durability and so on.
* Development engineer, that engineers the attributes of the automobile. This engineer may provide to the design engineer what spring rate he/she requires to provide the "ride" characteristics required for the automobile to perform as desired, etc.
* Manufacturing engineer, determines how to make it.

In Toyota, for example, manufacturing engineering is regarded as a more prestigious career path than designing and developing the cars.
 Product Engineering

Some of the engineering attributes/disciplines that are of importance to the automotive engineer:

Safety Engineering: Safety Engineering is the assessment of various crash scenarios and their impact on the vehicle occupants. These are tested against very stringent governmental regulations. Some of these requirements include: Seat belt and air bag functionality. Front and side crash worthiness. Resistance to rollover. Assessments are done with various methods and tools: Computer crash simulation, crash test dummies, partial system sled and full vehicle crashes.

Fuel Economy/Emissions: Fuel economy is the measured fuel efficiency of the vehicle in miles per gallon or litres per 100 kilometres. Emissions testing the measurement of the vehicles emissions: hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and evaporative emissions.

Vehicle Dynamics: Vehicle dynamics is the vehicles response of the following attributes: ride, handling, steering, braking, and traction. Design of the chassis systems of suspension, steering, braking, structure (frame), wheels and tires, and traction control are highly leveraged by the Vehicle Dynamics engineer to deliver the Vehicle Dynamics qualities desired.

NVH Engineering (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness): NVH is the customer's impression both tactile (feel) and audible (hear) feedback from the vehicle. While sound can be interpreted as a rattle, squeal, or hoot, a tactile response can be seat vibration, or a buzz in the steering wheel. This feedback is generated by components either rubbing, vibrating or rotating. NVH response can be classified in various ways: powertrain NVH, road noise, wind noise, component noise, and squeak and rattle. Note, there are both good and bad NVH qualities. The NVH engineer works to either eliminate bad NVH, or change the “bad NVH” to good (i.e., exhaust tones).

Performance: Performance is the driver’s perception of the vehicle's power and pickup. This is influenced by vehicle acceleration, sound of the engine, accelerator pedal feel, and shift quality. Performance is perceived in various ways: wide-open-throttle (WOT) acceleration, 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) -launch performance, or highway passing power.

Shift Quality: Shift Quality is the driver’s perception of the vehicle to an automatic transmission banana event. This is influenced by the powertrain (engine, transmission), and the vehicle (driveline, suspension, etc). Shift feel is both a tactile (feel) and audible (hear) response of the vehicle. Shift Quality is experienced as various events: Transmission shifts are felt as an upshift at acceleration (1-2), or a downshift maneuver in passing (4-2). Shift engagements of the vehicle are also evaluated, as in Park to Reverse, etc.

Durability / Corrosion Engineering: Durability and Corrosion engineering is the evaluation testing of a vehicle for its useful life. This includes mileage accumulation, severe driving conditions, and corrosive salt baths.

Package / Ergonomics Engineering: Package Engineering is a discipline that designs/analyzes the occupant accommodations (seat roominess), ingress/egress to the vehicle, and the driver’s field of vision (gauges and windows). The Package Engineer is also responsible for other areas of the vehicle like the engine compartment, and the component to component placement. Ergonomics is the discipline that assesses the occupant's access to the steering wheel, pedals, and other driver/passenger controls.

Climate Control: Climate Control is the customer’s impression of the cabin environment and level of comfort related to the temperature and humidity. From the windshield defrosting, to the heating and cooling capacity, all vehicle seating positions are evaluated to a certain level of comfort.

Driveability: Driveability is the vehicle’s response to general driving conditions. Cold starts and stalls, rpm dips, idle response, launch hesitations and stumbles, and performance levels.

Cost: The cost of a vehicle program is typically split into the effect on the variable cost of the vehicle, and the up-front tooling and fixed costs associated with developing the vehicle. There are also costs associated with warranty reductions, and marketing.

Program timing: To some extent programs are timed with respect to the market, and also to the production schedules of the assembly plants. Any new part in the design must support the development and manufacturing schedule of the model.

Assembly Feasibility: It is easy to design a module that is hard to assemble, either resulting in damaged units, or poor tolerances. The skilled product development engineer works with the assembly/manufacturing engineers so that the resulting design is easy and cheap to make and assemble, as well as delivering appropriate functionality and appearance.


 Development Engineer

A Development Engineer is a job function within Automotive Engineering, in which the development engineer has the responsibility for coordinating delivery of the engineering attributes of a complete automobile (bus, car, truck, van, SUV, etc.) as dictated by the automobile manufacturer, governmental regulations, and the customer who buys the product.

Much like the Systems Engineer, the Development Engineer is concerned with the interactions of all systems in the complete automobile. While there are multiple components and systems in an automobile that have to function as designed, they must also work in harmony with the complete automobile. As an example, the brake system's main function is to provide braking functionality to the automobile. Along with this, it must also provide an acceptable level of: pedal feel (spongy, stiff), brake system “noise” (squeal, shudder, etc), and interaction with the ABS (anti-lock braking system).

Another aspect of the development engineer's job is a trade-off process required to deliver all the automobile attributes at a certain acceptable level. An example of this is the trade-off between engine performance and fuel economy. While some customers are looking for maximum power from their engine, the automobile is still required to deliver an acceptable level of fuel economy. From the engine's perspective, these are opposing requirements. Engine performance is looking for maximum displacement (bigger, more power), while fuel economy is looking for a smaller displacement engine (ex: 1.4 L vs. 5.4 L). The engine size, though is not the only contributing factor to fuel economy and automobile performance. Other attributes include: automobile weight, aerodynamic drag, transmission gearing, emission control devices, and tires.

The Development Engineer is also responsible for organising automobile level testing, validation, and certification. Components and systems are designed and tested individually by the Product Engineer. The final evaluation though, has to be conducted at the automobile level to evaluate system to system interactions. As an example, the audio system (radio) needs to be evaluated at the automobile level. Interaction with other electronic components can cause interference. Heat dissipation of the system and ergonomic placement of the controls need to be evaluated. Sound quality in all seating positions needs to be provided at acceptable levels.

 Manufacturing Engineering

Manufacturing Engineers at automotive companies are involved in a wide array of manufacturing activities. They plan and engineer the assembly of whole vehicles as well as the individual parts that go into the vehicles. Design and layout of equipment and people, machine rates and line rates, specification of automation equipment, and manufacturing safety procedures are all some of the jobs that Manufacturing Engineers do.

Assembly plants build vehicles from parts they receive...they rarely build parts themselves. Manufacturing engineers at assembly plants plan out the body shop, engine and transmission placement, and the trim and chassis area of the final assembly. Seats, radios, interior trim panels, pick-up bedliners and wheels are examples of parts that need to be manufactured for a vehicle and whose creation would be overseen by an Automotive Manufacturing Engineer. While body panels, usually stamped sheet metal, have typically remained within the OEM, the general trend for all other parts is for them to be bought from outside suppliers. Most vehicles have greater than 60% supplier content (The Toyota Product Development System, Morgan and Liker)

The automotive industry has its own culture that Automotive Manufacturing Engineers need to know to effectively operate. The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), a consortium composed of hundreds of participating companies, have established rules and procedures that ensure parts meet strict quality levels. An Automotive Manufacturing Engineer typically works with statistics and process controls, validating that the process that produces parts will always produce those parts with quality. They also search for ways to continuously improve the process between product upgrades.

 Other automotive engineering roles

There are also other automotive engineers:

* The aerodynamics engineers will often give guidance to the styling studio so that the shapes they design are aerodynamic, as well as attractive.
* Body engineers will also let the studio know if it is feasible to make the panels for their designs.
* Quality engineer, logistics/transportation engineer, environmental engineer, performance engineer, durability engineer, reliability engineer, etc...

Disney gaat Blu-Ray promoten

Tot nu toe worden de verwachting over de verkoopscijfers van blu-ray niet ingelost. Blijkbaar zien de consumenten het nut nog niet in van de betere beeldkwaliteit via een blu-ray en opteren ze nog steeds voor een dvd.

Om de nieuwe digitale opslagtechniek te promoten, zal Disney naast Doornroosje (de eerste Disneyklassieker die op Blu-Ray uitgebracht wordt en reeds gepland was), nog vijf klassiekers op Blu-Ray uitbrengen gedurende de komende twee jaar. Men heeft het dan over Pinokkio, Sneeuwwitje, Fantasia. Fantasia 2000 en Belle en het Beest. Sneeuwwitje, de allereerste langspeelfilm van Walt Disney, zou reeds in oktober in Amerika op Blu-Ray verschijnen.

Op 3 juli reed de Mark VII Monorail Red voor het eerst voor het grote publiek. We konden jullie ook foto’s tonen van de aankomst van de Mark VII Monorail Orange en ondertussen hebben we via S. Smith foto’s van de Mark VII Monorail Blue die dez week testritten maakte. Disney heeft nog geen data vrijgegeven waarop de Monorail Blue en de Monorail Orange hun officiële intrede met publiek zullen doen. Yago’s Disney Nieuws houdt je uiteraard op de hoogte.

Four Seasons en Disney

Walt Disney World Co heeft de verkoop afgerond van 298 hectare grond aan Four Seasons Hotels en Resorts voor de bouw van een hotel en een golfbaan voor het nieuwe luxe resort dat vorig jaar aangekondigd werd als onderdeel van de uitbreiding van Walt Disney World Resort.

Op het stuk grond dat langs de noordoostelijke grens van Walt Disney World gelegen is, zal het Four Seasons Hotel Residence Club met 445 kamers gebouwd worden en een 18-holes kampioenschapsgolfbaan, alsook een aantal vakantiewoningen. WATG (Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo) is de architect van het hotel. Vandaag is van het hotel een eerste schets vrijgegeven.

Dit is een project waarmee we graag in verband worden gebracht." zei Scott Woroch, executive vice president, development, Four Seasons Hotels en Resorts. "Een familievakantie waar men nog vaak aan denkt zijn heel belangrijk voor onze gasten en we zijn dan ook heel enthousiast over de samenwerking met Disney voor dit unieke concept in Centraal-Florida."

"Dit is een belangrijke mijlpaal voor een project dat onze onderneming in staat zal stellen om een groter marktaandeel in de luxe reismarkt te krijgen." zegt Meg Crofton, president van Walt Disney World Resort. "Deze eerste samenwerking tussen Walt Disney World Resort en Four Seasons Hotels en Resorts zal leiden tot het aanbieden van een familiereisbestemming met wereldklasse dat een uitzonderlijke service garandeert wat de gasten van zowel Walt Disney als van Four Seasons Hotels en Resorts verwachten.

Het project werd reeds in maart 2007 aangekondigd. Met de bouw van het hotel zal men waarschijnlijk begin volgend jaar starten en de opening van het hotel is voorzien in 2012. Het project zal in fasen verlopen en dit in de komende 8 à 10 jaar.

Wall-E op DVD

19 november 2008 is de dag dat Wall-E op DVD en Blu-Ray verschijnt. Voor de DVD heeft men de keuze tussen een single disc DVD, een 3-disc DVD.

Wall-E (afkorting voor Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth-Class) vertelt het verhaal van een eenzame maar heel toegewijde robot die reeds gedurende 700 jaar de door de mensen verlaten aarde schoonmaakt. Deze animatiefilm is geschreven en geregisseerd door Academy Award-winnaar Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), geproduceerd door Jim Morris, gecoproduceerd door Lindsey Collins en bevat orginele geluidsbewerkingen van Academy Award-winnaar Ben Burtt (bekend van Star Wars, Indiana Jones en E.T.). De muziek is van de hand van Thomas Newman, die ook de muziek voor Finding Nemo schreef.

Op de gewone DVD staan als extra’s : commentaar van director Andrew Stanto, de shortfilm Burn-E, delete scenes, Sneak Peek: Wall-E's Tour of the Universe en Animated Sound Design - Building Worlds from the Sound Up.

Op de 3-disc versie vind je naast alles van de gewone DVD nog enkele extra delete scenes, The Pixar story by Leslie Iwerks, BnL Shorts - Amusing peek into the inner workings of the Buy n Large Corporation en Wall-E's Treasures and Trinket, Lots of Bots-storybook, making of featurettes, Bot Files en een digitale kopie van de film.

We hadden hier onze eigen foto’s van de werken aan de nieuwe attractie in de Walt Disney Studios maar afgelopen weekend hebben de mensen van PhotoMagiques een paar nieuwe foto’s gemaakt. De muurtjes die men langs het gebouw heeft gezet, zullen waarschijnlijk een nieuwe in- en/of uitgang vormen voor deze nieuwe attractie.

Het 5 jaar oude bord met de sponsors op de Place des Frères Lumière aan de buitenmuur van Studio Photo, is eindelijk bijgewerkt met de actuele lijst van sponsers. Alle sponsors van het hele resort zijn erop vermeld : Coca-Cola, Danone, Dole, Ford, Hasbro, Hertz, IBM, Kellogg's, Kodak, Nestlé, Orange (France Télécom) en Unilever.

Een Mickey- of prinsessenkamer ?

We hadden het hier al over een overnachting in ware piratenstijl die je in Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort kan boeken wel in het Disneyland Hotel dat net naast Disneyland en Disney’s California Adventure park gelegen is, is er nu de mogelijkheid om een Character Quarter te boeken.

Een Character Quarter bestaat uit een standaardkamer voor de ouders met een aangrenzend kamer die speciaal voor de kinderen in een Disneythema werd gegoten. De standaardkamer en de Disneykamer zijn via een tussendeur met elkaar verbonden. Het is niet mogelijk om enkel een Disneythemedkamer te boeken. Het Disneyland Hotel heeft 12 Mickey Mouse-kamers en zeven prinsessenkamers.

Iedere Disney Characterkamer heeft twee aparte bedden met meubilair, decoratie, beddengoed, tapijten, zelfs televisie en alle andere voorzieningen in het thema van Mickey Mouse of Disneyprinsessen.

Het Disneyland Hotel is het enige hotel waar de gasten een ganse nacht omringd door de wereld van Mickey Mouse en de Disneyprinsessen kunnen verblijven om zo de magie van hun verblijf in Disneyland te verlengen.

A massive HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the fabulous Bill Pearson, my Dad, and one of the greatest men you will ever meet.

According to my Mum tonight, Dad and I grow more alike every day.

I am more than happy to go with that as Dad is one of the most loving and generous people I have ever met and if I am only a little like him I will be happy.

Renault unveiled their Mégane Coupé Concept at the Geneva Motor Show this year and besides foreshadowing a new compact production coupe to be released some time in the future, the car also sports a pretty innovative pair of gullwing-like doors. The windows and the door are actually two separate pieces, but they both open at the same time with a movement that’s similar to dragonfly wings. And besides looking a lot cooler than the gullwing doors of the past, the unique system is also practical since it provides particularly easy entry and exit for passengers in the backseat.
