Kitchen Tiles

The design I have fallen in love with for my kitchen tiles is unfortunately not a tile but a piece of material!  This is a problem but not one that can not be overcome I am thinking.
Surely there is a way I can make this work....
I have tossed around a few solutions - material behind clear splashback glass.... it comes as wallpaper so maybe apoxy over the paper.... Photograph  it......

As I thought, there is a solution to every problem.  It turns out you can have tiles custom printed!!  Choose your tile, upload your image and away you go.  Fan-bloody-tastic.

Now I just need to know if anyone out there has had this done?  Does it work well?  Is it astronomically expensive?  do I need permission to reproduce the image?  Thoughts please people.

Steel Challenge Complete.

One design feature of our extension that we have been definite about since day one is our doors and windows in the living / kitchen / dining area.  The doors onto our deck will be industrial factory doors (double) with windows on either side. Kind of like these but with smaller panes.  The idea is that they will help link our traditional weatherboard house to our industrial and rustic interior decorating style.

We've decided not to powder coat the frames but to leave it as galvanised steel giving us a dirty silver finish, not as hard as the black.

Our problem has been the sourcing of these doors.  I originally found a company in Sydney but my mission this week was to try to find someone to make them a little closer to home to keep costs down.
Finally yesterday, after literally hours of Google searching I found a company that will custom make then exactly as we want and they are only a few suburbs away. I can't tell you how excited I was.  I have since found another company close to home and am feeling very pleased with myself for completing this week's challenge.

Now to get a quote!  Not so excited about this part - fingers crossed we don't have to sell a kidney.

More Floors

Flooring

Surfer Boy and I have been throwing around ideas for our flooring this weekend so I've spent hours hunched over the laptop looking at Salvage yards and reclaimed timber dealers.  Thought I'd take a break and see if looking at great rooms would help crystalise my thoughts.

So I guess I have established that I like white and wood - but which one on the floor - natural timber, lime wash, or white??

WINDOWS

And so it begins!
We've started to get a flurry of emails from our architect wanting us to decide on various elements of the house.  Unfortunately I was so sure that this renovation would never get the go-ahead that I completly blanked it from my mind so as to save myself from crushing disappointment.
Now I have to let her know what windows we want for each room and so the googleing begins...

It Can't Be True

I can't quite believe it but after 18 months we have FINALLY had our extension rubber stamped!!  No conditions, no changes - it's done.
I'm still in shock and I think and haven't quite grasped the fact that I can now let my imagination have full reign.  I can now start looking further ahead and start choosing materials and make decisions based on a home that may actually exist some day.

We've even met a couple of builders and may be able to lock in a date before the end of the month.  It all seems rather unreal but I'm sure it will sink in soon and I'll go nuts.  Stay tuned for lots of posts detailing the boring minutiae of the reno.

Nearly There

Well we've managed to move our staircase without too much drama although I will admit I was close to chucking the whole thing. We're anticipating that within the next couple of days we will be clear of council for the foreseeable future - you can imagine how pleased I will be about that.
Surfer Boy even managed to find a place for the fridge in the re-design which pleases me muchly.
Me thinks we might get this thing built after all.

Reno Update - you don't want to know!

After 18 months our council has decided it doesn't like where our stairs are!!!  Why would they sign the permit if they are going to change their minds later?
I can't even begin to understand how they work.
The upshot is we have to find somewhere else for our stairs - can you say 'complete re-design' anyone?

Refrigeration

The very wise and considered people in our local council have decided that our extension plans need to change AGAIN.  We are back to having to make the extension look as if it is seperate to the original house Arghhhhhhhh!
The bigggest impact this has for us doesn't seem that bad on paper but in reality it is a pain in the arse.  Our fridge has nowhere to go!

Our beautiful kitchen now does not work.  Who would have thought that one fridge could ruin the design of an entire extension.

Sooo today I am on the hunt for fridge alternatives.  Maybe a slimmer fridge will help - maybe an under the counter fridge - maybe a seperate freezer in the pantry....
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
